In conjunction with Angus Council, Carnoustie Canine Capers are promoting the Green Dog WalkersR initiative to encourage more people to be actively involved in improving the appearance of our streets and walkways in and around Carnoustie and District. Individuals sign the pledge which basically means that people volunteer to carry extra poo bags. Carnoustie pledgers are then given a highly visible Green Dog Walkers’R dog lead (one per household whilst stoc
ks last). If a dog walker has forgotten a poo bag they will recognise a Green Dog Walker R and know that they can ask for and be given a poo bag. The other aspect of it is if a Green Dog Walker sees someone who looks as though they have forgotten a bag or are not going to pick up after their dog, they can politely offer them a bag in a non confrontational way.
Key Partners in the Green Dog WalkerR are Carnoustie Community Council, Mel’s Pet Shop and the Wallace Veterinary Centre.
Approximately 60 businesses in the town have taken on to carry free poo bags which are available on request to someone who may have forgotten a poo bag. Participating businesses will carry a poster on their frontage.
Carnoustie Golf Links Management Committee also support the distribution of free poo bags are also available in the Starter’s Box, the tea hut and ground staff all carry poo bags which are available on request.
Carnoustie Canine Capers will also be piloting Dog Management Training in late 2012 / early 2013.
I own a dog and I find it frustrating that I take my responsibilities of cleaning up after my pet seriously, I took on my pet with a full understanding of this. The council are at fault as even with complaints they do very little to pursue matters. I complained several times after having had enough of my children tredding dog mess over my hall carpet. My 8 year old child cannot play outside our home without repercussions. On a hot day the smell is rancid need I say more. Ihe councils response to me was that I had a personnal vendetta over my neighbours as apparentely no one else complained. what can I do with an attitude of such disregard over something I happen to feel strongly about.
Some poo piles for the campaign, and a renewed hope that something will be done about it.
Kinloch Terraces, back entrances public walkway, communial washing line area. Friday PM, dog without supervision, no lead. pooed on grass beside child’s swing.
Beach public path near skate park Sat 7.30pm dog without supervision, no lead.
Kinloch Street in front of terraces near a grey post box. Sun 8.15am dog without supervision, no lead.
kind regards

I think it’s great that the Community Council is making the effort to improve our town and encourage the minority of dog owners who do not take responsibility for cleaning up after their dogs. I am personally fed-up by the continual mess in Queen Street, (particularly the bottom half of the street) which I now avoid on my way home if possible. I also find it disgusting to see dog pooh on the High Street beside food shops, often trailed along the pavement by prams and shoes.
Hopefully the campaign will increase the conscience of those who do not pick up after their dogs. Perhaps free bags and a few more bins would also help.

Like your other respondents I notice fouling when I am out with my dog. I am always careful to clean up.
Do irresponsible dog owners think along the lines that if they walk along a small stretch of road most days (say 300 per year) and their dog leaves faeces, that all it takes is 10 like minded dog owners to potentially leave over 3000 little presents on that stretch of road even if they go once a day ! A thought!
A suggestion:
A dog bin at the bottom end of Carlogie Road on the little grass area beside the ‘benners’ would be ideally situated for dog owners walking a loop around the ‘Westhaven’ end of town. I use the one at the bottom of Westhaven Road and find it very useful. Another at the site I suggest would help a lot I think – there are often faeces on the grass there.
3 sites for your survey:
The pavement at the top of Westhaven Road.
The pavement along Panbride Road.
The little grass triangle at the bottom of Carlogie Road.

I have a dog and he is walked regularly over the golf links and the beaches and I have never noticed any other dog owner not attending to picking up poo after their dog. I do know that when you are on the high street there is not 1 single recepticle for depositing any poo bags you may have had to use after your dog. I feel this is not the only place in Carnoustie where there are no bins, so perhaps placing them in the areas where there is more fowling would help.

Another route that appears to be ‘popular’ with dog fouling is proceeding north up Queen St then along Tennis Rd then south down Holyrood St and onto Lochty St. There also appears to be dog owners who are picking up there dog poo on these streets and then leaving the bag with its contents on the pavements and roads of Holyrood St and Tennis Rd at present!

Have just walked with our children along the lane at the back of our house. This is the lane which all children would use to go into Carlogie primary school. The lane is frequently a place where dog fouling occurs. Today there were 4 separate lots of poo in different parts of the lane. We are aware of your library campaign regarding dog fouling and support your campaign. We have children in the school who use this lane regularly and are sick fed up with dog fouling.

I agree. It is terrible at the lane. All those children using it too. I constantly have to clean my childs shoes as she has stepped in mess. I have phoned about this in the past but it seems there is nothing they can do.

During the summer hols I walked from Charles St. to the RBS bank with my 3 children everyweek day taking the Kinloch St route, it was a disgrace the amount of times i had to say to them to watch your feet, more dog poo, on a few occations we counted how many times and would u believe that one day the most we got to was 17 times that being mostly in Kinloch St., that Day Charles St. had 4 separate lots, some of the time we ended up having to walk on the road because the poo was scatered all over the pavement.

I have lived in lots of places all over Scotland and live here in Carnoustie now for 8 years, and never have i seen so much poo all over the place, and i seems to be getting worse, i have a dog and always clean up after my pooch. What annoys me is the peole who pick up the poo in a bag, then dump the bag on the ground … why not put it in a bin, if theres no bin close to you, pop it in your own bin at home. Some people eh!

i have a dog, and would not have taken on this responsibility if i wasn’t prepared to pick up his poo. The back pathways from mcdonald smith drive up past harris road to the bridge at burnside primary school and down the other side are a disgrace. There is a bin along the back path at mcdonald smith drive and at the pitch on thomas street, there is no need for it.

Most places I walk in Carnoustie I come accross some dog poo. I walk often along the beach path at the back of tayside street , seabrae and on to Westhaven. Not only do I see lots of dog poo but I see apparent owners of dogs just walking along oblivious (or are they) of what the dog has just done. We certainly need more bins for us responsible dog owners. One bin fell down and has not been replaced—perhaps one at the bottom of seabrae!

The lane used by a majority of carlogie PS pupils entering / leaving the school at the south end is a constant battle to tiptoe through the poos!!!! Kids dont look where they are walking and they shouldnt have to if dog owners took responsibility for their pets mess!! On the spot fines should definetly be introduced in this a clear HOT SPOT area! Trust action will be taken.

The lane at the back of 208 – 214 Ravensby Road is bad. Dog or dogs foul outside garden gates and also on piece of grass adjacent to number 208. Have actually seen the dog – but not the owner!

Tennis Road, Holyrood Street and Queen Street continue to be littered with dog poo. One day last week I saw a red cocker spaniel leave mess on the corner of Keith Avenue whilst its owner shouted on it from further up the road failing to clean up. This was cleaned up later that day by a house owner within the street yet the following day there was dog mess again in exactly the same place which was cleaned again and two days later the exact same!!

I live on Taymouth Street but my back garden backs onto Charles Street. The dog fouling on both these streets is awful but now an owner is letting their dog into my back garden and twice a week or more I am left to clean it up. I am absolutely disgusted that a dog owner is allowing their dog to do this and they better hope I don’t catch them. I have two young children and have to check my garden daily before they go out to play

A few thoughts:-
With respect but the community council are dealing with the effect but not the cause of the mess.
Will new bins be placed at these hot spots?
Will biodegradable poo bags be supplied by the council as in some towns?
Are people aware of the fine that can be imposed?
Are people aware of the zoonoses carried by dogs and their effects on humans?
Dicky bags are odour sealed bags made of neoprene. They are washable and waterproof etc. etc. The company has been working with councils see http://www.dickyman.com Why not bulk buy and sell to residents at a reduced price through our local vets and pet shop?
A responsible dog owner.

I am blind and have a Guide Dog. As a guide dog owner, I am exempt from picking up if my dog poos on the pavement or grass. However, no matter how difficult it is for me to find where my dog poos, I always pick up after him. If a blind person can do that, why can’t all sighted dog owners do the same?
A loose dog, or a dog with an irresponsible owner, has deposited a large pile of poo on Arbroath Road at the steps at the foot of the lane leading into Broadlands. First spotted on Friday 15th Oct. It is still there! I can’t see it but I know it’s there as I stood in it. Another lot sits nicely on the pavement in Lomond Drive!. No doubt I will stand on it next time I go round that way. It’s bad enough being blind but, you try cleaning dog muck off your shoes when you can’t see…….YUCK!
I think there is a lack of waste bins – maybe I just can’t find them! There is one at the bottom of Westhaven Road but as far as I know, there are none in Arbroath Road or surrounding areas leading into town.

Huge amount of dog mess left on Carlogie Road pavement (West side) between Maule St. and McKenzie St. Saturday 20th November, prior to 0900hrs NO attempt by the owner to clean up mess. I have since hosed mess into road gutter to prevent it being spread all over the pavement.

Sorry my thoughts on publishing a short message on dog fouling to empty houses was not clear.
I should have said to put through the letter box of houses which are about to be occupied either new or resold, a short statement in leaflet form pointing out their responsibility.
I have see not so long ago couples from the new housing at McBride drive walk towards the football park allow there dog to foul and make no attempt to clean up.

Thomas Street Football Pitch is covered in Dog Poo aswell as the area between Greenside Place and the bridge over the barry burn to Buddon Drive, there is a dog bin in the park and most resposible dog owners use this but having walked through the park today it is like a mine field and this is were children are mean to play football and right beside a school its disgusting

Great work by the council lads. The mess was attended to by workers today 5/01/2011.
Why is there a dog bin in the park? This is a kids play area, it should be Dog Free.
Are there any Dog Bins Inside the New Beach Park???
No, i thought not, well, we dont want one where the Ravensby kids play either, Can i prepose a removal and resiting please.

What progress has been made on the petition collated by Arno Paeth in the summer/autumn of 2010 which was presented to the Community Council?

I had a meeting with Arno and Mark Callison (Tayside Police) over the Christmas period when we discussed Arno’s ideas for a dog exercise park in the Town. Arno and I agreed that we would both investigate and pursue the options further and get back in touch when we had something to report. I will be in touch with Arno and will be able to give a progress update from the Community Council position in due course. If in the meantime you or your group have any input or ideas, please let me know – the more interest, the better!

One of the routes I use regularly with my guide dog is the lane that leads from Linefield Road, through Broadlands to the stepsleading to Arbroath Road. Over the last 2 weeks there have been numerous bundles of dog muck appearing. This must be left by a dog whose owners live in the estate. Being blind, I only know the muck is there after I have stood in it. This lane is used by children going back and forward to Carlogie School. It may only be one irresponsible owner who is too lazy to pick up their dogs muck, or, do they simply not know how to do it? Well, whatever the reason, if I can do it -even if it means having to fumble around on the pavement trying to find it, you can do it too.

It seems to me we are being over run with dogs in the town and it appears we cannot even escape them when out for a stroll in the park, walk on the beach or indeed even a meal in a public house.
Please try to remmember when out that your dog may be part of your family but others may very well not want it to be a part of theirs
This is really getting beyond the joke now with our visionally impaired residents coming croppers too.
I would estimate 85% of dog owners to be irresponsible, either by fouling, out off control, off lead and causing others to be placed in a state of fear.
There are codes in place for owners to abide by, but these are flouted by almost every dog owning resident in the town.
Seems on most local networking sites that Carnoustie residents pick up after their dogs,so are folk bringing their dogs to our town to foul our pavements, parks & football pitches, most would have you believe this to be so.

Guide dogs, hearing dogs, canine assistance dogs and assistance dogs who can warn owners of an impending epilepsy fit, diabetic coma or similar are a key part of some people lives. Some people might not be here if it were not for their dogs. Similarly some people would not be alive if it were not for search and rescue dogs. Drugs is a big issue which can be detected by the use of sniffer dogs.
The UK figure is that 52% of households have dogs. We have a population of c 12k in Carnoustie in c 5,000 household which works out at about c 2600 dogs (in theory).
It is the owner of business premises who makes the decision whether or not dogs can be permitted/welcomed on to their premises.
It would be interesting to know where the 85% figure is drawn from.
I see there is an “Anti-Dog Fouling Campaign”. It will be interesting to see what that is all about.
